Who We AreIHSA provides collegiate riders of all skills the opportunity to compete individually and as teams in equestrian competition. It was founded on the principle that any college student should be able to participate in horse shows regardless of his or her riding ability or financial status.

Our HistoryFrom its beginning with just two intercollegiate competing colleges, the IHSA is an organization that encompasses 37 Regions in 8 Zones with almost 400 member colleges in 45 states and Canada – representing more than 9000 riders in both Hunter Seat Equitation, Western Horsemanship, and Reining. In 1999 the original organization was dissolved and IHSA Inc was incorporated as a non-profit organization.

IHSA Horse Showing 101
IHSA Horse showing expands across the entire country to provide a convenient way for undergraduate students to compete while attending college. Currently, there are six zones across the country, with at least two regions in each zone; each region consists of about ten teams. The IHSA shows offered in the Zone IV, Region 4 area focus on English Hunt Seat Equitation at all levels. The classes at the shows are divided into six different divisions based upon show experience and number of years riding. During the fall and spring semesters, each school hosts their own local IHSA horse show using their own horses. Riders are unaware of which horse they will be riding until moments before entering the ring. This way, the focus is mainly on the rider, not the horse. Riders can compete in several different divisions. Riders earn points individually during the show for their school that are added at the end to determine the school's overall placing. After the local shows are complete, the schools with the highest points advance to The Regional Championship competition. Qualified riders and teams then proceed to Zone Championships.
